Macronutrients what exactly are they? There are THREE macronutrients: Protein Carbohydrate and Dietary Fat. These three provide the body with the calories (energy) it needs to function on daily basis. Most foods contain 2 or 3 of the macro nutrients. For example a steak contains both protein and fat. While a banana is made up almost entirely of carbohydrates. Protein (4 calories per gram) Protein is composed of amino acids which are organic compounds made of numerous elements including carbon hydrogen nitrogen etc. These amino acids are the building blocks of protein which in turn are the building blocks of muscle. Proper and adequate intake of protein is CRUCIAL to a healthy lifestyle as well as maintenance & muscle growth. Studies have shown that the sweet spot for daily protein intake for someone who is trying to either maintain their current physic or improve upon it is 0.82 grams of protein per pound of body weight. So a 195-pound person (me) would need 160 grams of protein per day to be in that optimal spot. Carbohydrates (4 calories per gram) Despite being demonized in the media carbs are NOT evil and can be a part of a health lifestyle. Carbs can be either simple (easily digestible white bread sugar etc) or complex (sweet potato beans etc). Carbs act as one of the main energy sources for your body and are a great source of energy. Some of us will tend to associate rapid weight gain with eating a lot of carbs but fear not thats probably just water. A single consumed carb retains 3 grams of water in your body. So that weight? Most likely just water weight. Dietary Fats (9 calories per gram) Another energy source for the body (the one that was demonized prior to carbs). Fat comes in numerous varieties (poly mono etc) and helps the body perform an abundance of critical functions (fat soluble vitamin intake etc) All three can and should be a part of healthy lifestyle.
